FIRE REPORTED IN ENGINE ROOM OF MARAD VESSEL MV CAPE HENRY

A small fire broke out in the engine room of the U.S. Maritime Administration vessel Cape Henry at its layberth in Alameda, California.

The San Francisco Fire Department was alerted to the fire at about 3:30 a.m. Monday morning.

The fire was reported in the engine room and resulted in one crew member being taken to a local hospital for observation. The fire was extinguished at 3:44 a.m., the SFFD reported.

 

The MV Cape Henry (T-AKR 5067), a roll-on/roll-off cargo ship, is berthed at Pier 96 at the former Naval Air Station Alameda. Built in 1979, she was purchased by MARAD in 1986 and assigned to the Ready Reserve Force. Since then, she has been maintained in reduced operating status and, if required, can be fully activated within 5 days.
